Deadlines: May 20 / June 16 / July 1 / July 15
To help support our local film scene, Indie Memphis allowed Memphis directors to take an entry fee waiver on their first submission to the 2008 Indie Memphis Film Festival. (To be eligible for the waiver, the film's director must live in Memphis, Tennessee, and be listed as such on Withoutabox; Limit one waiver per director.)
The 2008 Indie Memphis Film Festival is set to take place October 9-16 at Malco's Studio on the Square, a boutique theater that provides an atmosphere of intimate accessibility in the heart of the historic Overton Square neighborhood in Midtown Memphis -- just a stone's throw away from the festival's host hotel, numerous restaurants, bars and clubs.
Last year, writer/director John Sayles and producer Maggie Renzi opened the festival's 10th year with a special screening of their latest film, HONEYDRIPPER, with Gary Clark Jr. and Yaya DaCosta in attendance -- along with a surprise appearance by Angela Bassett. Panelists and jurors included award-winning filmmakers and industry veterans, such as Ira Sachs (FORTY SHADES OF BLUE; MARRIED LIFE), Brian Gordon (Nashville Film Festival), and Neal Block & Jeff Reichert (Magnolia Pictures). Other past attendees and special guests have included Craig Brewer (HUSTLE AND FLOW; BLACK SNAKE MOAN), Joey Lauren Adams (COME EARLY MORNING), Albert Maysles (GREY GARDENS; GIMME SHELTER) and Bob Mondello (National Public Radio).
Juried awards at the 2008 Indie Memphis Film Festival include: Best Feature, Best Documentary, Best Short and Best Animated or Experimental Film, plus "Soul of Southern Film" and "Hometowner" awards in each category and the Ron Tibbett Excellence in Filmmaking Award. Audience Choice awards are presented in Feature, Documentary, Short and Hometowner categories.
GENERAL RULES
Submissions must have been completed after January 1, 2007 and may not be publicly exhibited in Shelby County, Tennessee prior to the 2008 festival dates (excluding other Indie Memphis screenings). Films previously submitted to Indie Memphis will not be reconsidered.
Films accepted to screen at the festival will be categorized in competitive and non-competitive categories at the sole discretion of Indie Memphis. Films with theatrical distribution may not qualify for juried competition, but would still be eligible for audience awards. Instructional films, industrials and promotional videos are generally not appropriate for submission.
Submissions will be notified of their selection status on or around Sept. 8, 2008. If accepted, three additional DVDs of the final film must be provided to Indie Memphis for jury screenings, media requests and the festival archive.
Indie Memphis may deny acceptance of any film at its sole discretion. If accepted, the screening schedule (including venue, time and number of screenings) is at the sole discretion of Indie Memphis.
Entry fees are nonrefundable.
The entrant is responsible for the cost of shipping the submission and exhibition materials to Indie Memphis. Films being sent from outside the United States must be sent "free domicile" to the Indie Memphis office, with all transportation charges, duties and taxes prepaid by shipper. Indie Memphis will cover return shipping (or will ship to another festival) within the continental United States via ground shipping. Indie Memphis cannot cover overnight or priority shipping costs, or ship US films to an address outside the United States.
TERMS & CONDITIONS
The entrant guarantees that they have legal right to submit their film and have obtained all necessary rights and clearances to screen the work at the Indie Memphis Film Festival.
Submission of work confirms that the Indie Memphis Film Festival has permission to exhibit it (and any moving image excerpts or reproduced stills) during the festival and for any festival publicity or promotion.
Every precaution will be exercised in handling entries and exhibition copies of submitted films, but the entrant agrees to hold the festival, its organizers, employees, volunteers, sponsors, and partnering organizations harmless for damage to or loss of materials submitted.
